Overview

Gulmarg is located 56 kilometres from Srinagar in a cup-shaped valley in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas at an elevation of 2,650 metres (8,694 feet). Gulmarg's soil is made up of lacustrine deposits, glacial deposits, and Pleistocene-era moraines that cover schists, sandstones, limestones, shales, and other types of rock.

It was named 'Gulmarg' ("meadow of flowers") by Yousuf Shah Chak, the ruler of Kashmir from 1579 to 1586, who visited the area often with his queen Habba Khatoon. The Mughal emperor Jahangir gathered wild flowers of twenty-one different varieties for his gardens in Gulmarg. British civil servants began using Gulmarg as a retreat in the 19th century to avoid the plains of Indo-Gangetica during the summer. Their favourite activities were hunting and golfing, and three golf courses, one just for women, were built in Gulmarg. The world's highest golf course is one of the courses, situated at a height of 2,650 metres (8,690 feet). A British ski club was founded in Gulmarg in 1927, and the resort hosted two ski events a year, one at Christmas and one at Easter.

Daisies, forget-me-nots, and buttercups are among the wild flowers that bloom in the spring and summer on the naturally occurring meadows of Gulmarg, which are blanketed in snow during the winter. The meadows are encircled by green pine and fir forests and broken up by small lakes and enclosed parks. In Gulmarg, winter sports such as skiing are practiced on the slopes of Apharwat Peak, which is located at a height of 4,267 metres (13,999 feet).
